Telescopic Glasses

Telescopic glasses aid distance vision for those with macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and other central vision issues.

Telescopic Glasses: Helping You See Better from a Distance

Telescopic glasses can be a great help for patients with impaired vision who have trouble seeing objects at a distance. They are especially useful for those with macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and glaucoma, as well as other conditions that affect central vision.

In most states, drivers are allowed to use telescopes if they are prescribed by a low vision doctor. But they can also be used for other activities such as recognizing faces at a distance, watching live performances or sporting events, and even for watching TV or using the computer.

These glasses may look a little unusual, but they can be life-changing for those who struggle with distance vision. I often tell my patients, “I’m going to help you see better, but your friends may be surprised by your new glasses!”

Full Field and Wide Field Telescope Glasses

These types of glasses are best suited for specific tasks like watching TV or looking at sporting events. They offer a limited field of view and are not ideal for moving around a lot while wearing them.

Bioptic Telescopes

Bioptic telescopes are mounted near the top of the eyeglass lenses, allowing the person to look below them through their regular prescription glasses. They are most commonly used for spotting signs, recognizing addresses, and identifying distant objects. Bioptic telescopes do not affect everyday horizontal and straight forward vision, making them safe for driving and other specialised tasks. To use them, the person simply lowers their chin slightly to look through the telescopes.
