Low Vision Exam: Different from Any Other Eye Exam
A low vision examination is unlike any other eye examination you’ve ever had. Our focus is on understanding your level of vision and finding ways to enhance it. We use specialized prescription low vision devices to facilitate this process. Our goal is to help you see the things that are most important to you, whether that’s reading the newspaper, recognizing neighbors, or even driving.
Specialized Low Vision Glasses and Aids
We will test your vision with specialized low vision glasses. Before we order any low vision glasses, we’ll demonstrate how they can improve your vision. We’ll also discuss lighting and what types of lighting work best. We’ll review other aids, such as electronic magnifiers, and other aids, to find what’s appropriate for your specific needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Low vision refers to a vision condition where you don’t see well enough to perform everyday tasks, even with glasses, contacts, or medical eye care. This includes difficulties with reading, walking, cooking, playing cards, and driving.
There are many causes of low vision, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, Stargardt’s disease, retinitis pigmentosa, and albinism. It can also be a combination of multiple issues.
A Low Vision Examination lasts about 1 to 2 hours and is focused on vision and function, rather than treating eye disease. The exam is divided into four parts. The first part involves a discussion with the patient to determine how low vision affects their daily life. The second part involves testing to determine the level of impairment. The third part involves working with magnification, illumination, and other low vision devices to find solutions for the patient’s “wish list” of goals. The final part is another conversation to determine the best solution for each individual task.
A Low Vision Examination takes one hour and costs $350.00. If you have Medicare or a PPO a portion of the exam fee is commonly covered. The cost of low vision glasses varies depending on the type of lenses prescribed, such as telescopic, microscopic, prismatic, E-Scoop®, monocular, binocular, full field, wide field, or bioptic designs. The glasses may also include special lighting or tinting to reduce glare and optimize retinal function.
It usually takes about four weeks to fabricate specialized low vision glasses.
If a patient’s prescription changes or their condition worsens within the first three months, the lenses can be changed at no cost. If it happens between three months and a year, the fee is 50% off. However, this rarely occurs. The doctor will demonstrate how the patient will see through the lenses before ordering them.
